Resistive touch screens are designed to support single-touch input. There is no limitation on the type of material used for input. Highly cost-competitive, stable, mature technology with excellent detection accuracy.
Projected Capacitive touch screens support single or multiple touch points, allowing for gestural interaction. No part of the screen physically moves at detection, making the touch experience lighter and smoother (smart-phone like).
Scratch Resistance, Screen Durability?
Surface hardness is measured on a 10-point scale from 1H (graphite) to 10H (diamond). This scale determines resistance to severe scratching and day-to-day wear and tear.
CONSIDER: your environmental conditions, likely exposure to accidental damage by sharp objects and exposure to chemicals.
Resistive touch screens are highly durable (supporting 10M touches at the same location), but can be more prone to surface damage from scratches and chemicals. Typically rated level 3H (pearl), they can be treated to achieve level 7H (quartz).
Projected Capacitive screens are recommended for any environment with potential exposure to weather, chemicals, cleaning products, and/or accidental or malicious surface damage. They are built to ratings of 7H (Quartz) or 9H (Sapphire).
