Resistive Customizations

Dawar offers a wide variety of custom product enhancements to complement our resistive product offering. Whether you have a ruggedized application that requires a custom gasket to help with sealing against dirt and debris or an outdoor application that requires enhanced sunlight readability and low reflections, our experienced sales team can help select the right product enhancements for your application that is sure to improve usability, performance and end user experience.

Overlays

Dawar’s 4- and 8-wire resistive touch screens can be bonded to a full sheet of polyester or polycarbonate overlay. This graphic overlay could also be the graphic overlay of a membrane switch layer. This design eliminates the need for clumsy perimeter gaskets or thick bezel cutouts. It provides for a washable front surface and extra durability for the touch screen in harsh environments. A full ESD shield of ITO coating or a perimeter conductive ink or foil shield layer can also be added.

Gaskets

Dawar offers a wide variety of gasket materials and sealing options that can be used for various application requirements including:

  • Integration of the touch screen to the LCD or top bezel
  • Sealing against ingress of dirt, debris and other liquids from an outside environment
  • Shielding
Dawar carries a variety of gaskets, the majority of which are pressure sensitive acrylic adhesives or foam adhesives that are offered with either a single or double side of adhesive. The gaskets are typically die-cut and applied in a continuous frame type configuration. Gasket strips are also available for VHB type gaskets to provide a more cost effective solution.

Film Enhancements

  • Anti-Reflective Films – AR films or coatings can be incorporated into various places in the product construction to reduce light reflections at interfaces with air. The reduction of the reflected light will enhance the contrast and visibility of the display image by reducing the intensity of reflected ambient light back to the user.
  • Privacy Films – These films can be incorporated into the sensor construction to narrow the viewing area of the display to the user directly in front of the display. This can be helpful to eliminate surrounding individuals from seeing confidential information in public areas.
  • Anti-Microbial Films – These films can inhibit the growth of microbes on the surface of the touch screen. This can be useful in public use applications where many different people are touching the screen.
  • Polarizer Films – Polarizer films are used to improve sunlight readability with resistive touch screens. Adding polarizing films to the resistive touch screen construction enhances the contrast of the display image in high ambient lighting conditions. A circular polarizer on the top surface will cancel incident light reflections from the interior and rear surfaces of the touch screen. Adding a quarter wave retarder to the rear of the touch screen will enhance the light transmitted from the display by changing the phase of the light to maximize its transmission through the circular polarizer on the front of the touch screen.
  • Heaters – In extremely cold conditions adding a transparent heater to the touch screen stack (typically on the rear) can prevent condensation on the surface or within the touch screen and display structure. This can also help with display performance by keeping the display within its operational temperature range.
  • Top Buffer Film – An additional layer of film can be added to the top layer of resistive touch screens to provide various performance enhancements including:
    • Improved UV and scratch resistance
    • Added protection against chemical abrasion
    • Anti-glare options other than what is available with ITO coated substrates
    • Added stiffness to the top circuit to help keep the circuit flat
    • Improved touch lifetime with stylus use
    • Alternate coatings such as Anti-Reflective, Anti Smudge, etc.
    • Extended life for outdoor applications in harsh environmental conditions

EMI Shielding

EMI Shielding is frequently used in applications where the user needs to contain EMI noise inside the unit to pass radiated emissions requirements or to prevent EMI noise from entering the unit in order to pass susceptibility requirements. Shields of various conductivity and shielding effectiveness can be incorporated into the sensor structure to aid in controlling EMI from entering or leaving the unit.

Ruggedized Layers

Dawar offers the ability to ruggedize any resistive FG (Film-Glass) or PL (Film-Film-Glass) solution through the addition of either a front piece of thin glass or a thicker polycarbonate or glass rear backer material to enhance the overall impact resistance of the unit.

Dawar has designed several products for customers that are required to pass certain drop ball tests. This is typically achieved by building up the thickness on the rear layer of a PL resistive touch screen through the use of a thicker substrate such as 6mm tempered glass. Other rear substrates and thicknesses are available for PL product, depending on your testing and impact requirements. Our sales team can help select the right option for your application.

Dawar offers a full range of standard Glass-Film-Glass 5-Wire product and also offers the ability to add a glass front layer to any 4-Wire or 8-Wire FG product. The glass front durability and feel of capacitive touch screens with the input functionality of resistive touch screens makes Dawar’s Glass-Film-Glass (GFG) touch screens the perfect solution for harsh environments and public use applications.
